An Artist's Date is a concept introduced by author and creativity advocate, Julia Cameron in her book The Artist's Way. It is a scheduled block of time that an artist devotes to nurturing their inner creativity. Here are the key aspects of an Artist's Date: Solitude: It is a solo adventure. Spending time alone allows for introspection and the freedom to explore personal interests without outside influence. Playfulness: It should be fun and engaging. The activities chosen should excite and inspire the artist, fostering a sense of play and curiosity. Regularity: It is recommended to be a weekly commitment. Consistently scheduling this time helps build a habit of prioritizing creative self-care. Variety: Activities can vary widely, from visiting a museum or art gallery, taking a walk in nature, attending a live performance, exploring a new neighborhood, to trying a new craft or hobby. The primary goal of an Artist's Date is to refill the creative well, provide inspiration, and reconnect with the sense of wonder and joy that fuels artistic endeavors. I am inviting everyone on a Summer Artist's Date Challenge on Instagram, beginning the week of July 29th through August 31. All you need to do is:
Your Artist's Date may look like a museum visit, a summer concert, a movie or documentary that you view at home, reading a book (fiction or non-fiction) that motivates you, a cooking, art, or writing class, taking a walk or hike in nature, almost any solo activity that fuels your creative fire! The individuals who post the most will be selected to receive a signed copy of my book, Creative Sparks: 21 Affirmations and Inspiration for Creativity at Midlife! |
