Fall has a focus for getting "back to school" especially for youth and young adults returning to grade school or college.  Fall is also a wonderful time for us as creatives to explore how we can learn a new creative skill, launch a new creative endeavor or refresh our current creative practice.

When was the last time you took a studio art class in your area of expertise, explored a new creative practice or learn something totally new?   Here's some benefits of taking some workshops or courses for creativity:

  • Exposes You to New Information:  You get to learn some techniques that you always wanted to try or an easier way to do something.  You also may find out about current trends in your creative practice that you need to be aware of to get ahead.   Learning a new creative active also appeals to your curiousity and it helps you determine which kind of activities you want to pursue down the road.
  • Sharpens Your Existing Skills:   Let's face it...our creative skills we may have developed can get rusty or in some cases, outdated.  To stay innovative and fresh, taking time out to get updated on new ways of doing things keep us inspired and interested in our creative process.
  • Meet New People and Expand Our Network:  Whether we take classes online or in person, we get the opportunity to meet some fellow creatives that we may not have met otherwise.  These people can help expand your personal network for creative support or may eventually lead to collaborations or other opportunities.
  • New Skills to Add to Your Bio or Resume for Future Opportunities:   As we amass new skills and information, we open ourselves to new opportunities to share our creativity.  By taking a specific class or completing a course, we may become eligible for grant funding, consulting contracts or teaching artist positions if we want to monetize our creative pursuits.
  • Keeps Our Brain Active and Alert: Learning keeps our brains activated.  By opening up our minds to new information, we stay alive and alert for new creative ideas and innovative thinking.

What workshops, classes or courses are available in your community that you always wanted to try or explore? Are you interested in honing your writing skills, exploring movement through a dance class, or want to try your hand at learning how to play the piano? Take time to make a list of activites and creative interests that you would like to try and explore what is available in your area.  Just about every community offers these educational and professional development opportunities either online or in person at a variety of price points that make it affordable for anyone to participate.  Make a plan to sign up for a class, workshop or course for the Fall and watch how your creativity  thrives as a result.

As a creative individual, your inner critic can be one of the biggest hurdles you face on your artistic journey. That nagging voice inside your head that questions your abilities, criticizes your work, and sows seeds of self-doubt can hinder your creativity and prevent you from fully expressing yourself. In this blog article, I will explore effective strategies for dealing with your inner critic and fostering a nurturing environment for your creative process.

Recognize and Acknowledge Your Inner Critic:
The first step in dealing with your inner critic is to recognize its presence. Become aware of the negative self-talk and self-doubt that arises during your creative endeavors. By acknowledging its existence, you can separate it from your true creative voice and understand that it does not define your worth or artistic abilities.

Challenge Negative Thoughts and Reframe Self-Talk:
When your inner critic speaks up, challenge the validity of its claims. Question the evidence behind its negative statements and replace them with positive affirmations. Reframe your self-talk to focus on constructive feedback rather than harsh judgment. Treat yourself with kindness and compassion, acknowledging that making mistakes and experiencing setbacks are integral parts of the creative process.

Embrace Imperfection and the Learning Process:
Perfectionism is often a driving force behind the inner critic. Embrace the notion that art is a journey of growth and learning. Understand that each piece you create is an opportunity to experiment, learn, and evolve as an artist. Embrace imperfections as unique elements of your artistic style and celebrate the beauty of the artistic process itself, rather than fixating solely on the end result.

Surround Yourself with Supportive Communities:
Engage with a supportive network of fellow creatives who understand the struggles and self-doubt that can arise. Share your work and seek constructive feedback from trusted individuals who can offer encouragement and guidance. Join creative groups, attend workshops, or participate in online communities to foster connections that uplift and inspire.

Practice Self-Care and Self-Compassion:
Taking care of your overall well-being is essential in managing your inner critic. Prioritize self-care activities that rejuvenate your mind and body, such as practicing mindfulness, engaging in physical exercise, getting enough rest, and nurturing healthy habits. Cultivate self-compassion by treating yourself with the same kindness, understanding, and forgiveness that you would extend to a dear friend facing similar challenges.

Create for Yourself First:
Shift your focus away from external validation and create art that truly speaks to you. Let go of the need for approval and create with authenticity and passion. When you create from a place of personal expression and joy, you cultivate a stronger sense of self and develop resilience against the judgment of your inner critic.

Dealing with your inner critic is an ongoing process that requires self-awareness, self-compassion, and the willingness to challenge negative thoughts. By recognizing its presence, reframing self-talk, embracing imperfection, seeking support, practicing self-care, and creating from a place of authenticity, you can tame your inner critic and create a nurturing space for your creativity to flourish. Remember, your artistic journey is unique, and the voice that truly matters is your own. Embrace your creative spirit and let it guide you towards self-discovery and artistic fulfillment.

The Sacred Journey Within: Creativity as a Transformative Spiritual Practice

Creativity has long been revered as a profound and transformative human endeavor. Beyond its artistic and practical applications, creativity can also serve as a spiritual practice—a path to self-discovery, connection, and transcendence. In this blog article, we will explore the profound relationship between creativity and spirituality, and how engaging in creative expression can become a sacred journey of self-realization and spiritual growth.

Tapping into the Divine Flow:
Creativity is often described as a state of "flow" or being in the zone, where time seems to dissolve, and inspiration flows effortlessly. This state of flow aligns with spiritual experiences of transcendence, where individuals feel connected to something greater than themselves. By engaging in creative activities, we open ourselves to the divine flow, accessing deeper levels of consciousness and experiencing a sense of unity with the universe.

Cultivating Presence and Mindfulness:
Creative pursuits demand presence and mindfulness—a deep engagement with the present moment. When we immerse ourselves in the creative process, we let go of past and future concerns, grounding ourselves in the here and now. This state of mindfulness allows us to connect with our inner selves, transcend the limitations of the ego, and tap into a deeper well of inspiration and intuition.

Self-Expression and Authenticity:
Creativity provides a space for authentic self-expression—a means to communicate our deepest thoughts, emotions, and desires without judgment or inhibition. By embracing and honoring our unique creative voice, we foster a deeper connection with our true selves and cultivate a sense of authenticity. This process of self-expression can be deeply spiritual, as it allows us to explore our inner landscape and share our truth with the world.

Healing and Transformation:
Creative expression has the power to heal and transform. Engaging in artistic activities can serve as a cathartic release, helping us process and transcend emotional wounds or traumas. By channeling our experiences into art, we find solace, gain new perspectives, and embark on a journey of healing and transformation. Creativity becomes a sacred vessel through which we integrate our past, find meaning, and pave the way for growth and renewal.

Connection and Communion:
Creativity can foster a profound sense of connection and communion—with ourselves, others, and the larger universe. Through our creative endeavors, we open channels of communication and dialogue, transcending language and cultural barriers. Art becomes a universal language that unites people, facilitating a sense of interconnectedness and shared humanity. Engaging in creative collaborations and participating in artistic communities can deepen our sense of belonging and spiritual connection.

Embracing Mystery and Transcendence:
Creativity invites us to embrace the mystery and transcend the limits of our logical minds. It encourages us to explore the realm of intuition, symbolism, and metaphor—an invitation to dive into the depths of our subconscious and the collective unconscious. By surrendering to the creative process, we open ourselves to divine inspiration and guidance, allowing our art to become a vessel for profound spiritual insights and revelations.

Creativity, when approached with intention and reverence, can become a transformative spiritual practice. By tapping into the divine flow, cultivating presence, expressing our authentic selves, healing and transforming, fostering connection, and embracing mystery, we embark on a sacred journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth. Through creativity, we transcend the boundaries of the mundane and touch the realm of the sacred, deepening our understanding of ourselves, the world, and the interconnected web of existence. Embrace the transformative power of creativity as a gateway to spiritual exploration and illumination.
